Avon Lake is the easternmost community in Lorain County on the shores of Lake Erie. It is bordered by Bay Village, (Cuyahoga County) to the east, Avon to the South, and Sheffield Lake to the West.
There are 6,711 households in Avon Lake with a total population over 18,000. The median family income is around $66,000 with a per capita income over $32,000.
Residents enjoy the recreational activities offered by six community parks, 20 miles of bike trails, public beaches, and the boat launch. The parks and playgrounds total 220 acres. There is a municipal swimming pool, golf course, tennis courts, and an ice rink. There are a wide variety of activities for seniors and teens through the old firehouse community center.
Shopping is somewhat limited to specialty shops and grocery stores at the Avon Lake Towne Center and the Landings. There are several restaurants surrounding the community. Stella’s is one of the oldest restaurants. Jakes is the newest, having opened in 2009. Athena’s Family Restaurant, Aroma, Johnny Malloy’s, and Las Cazuela’s provide a variety of choices.
Much of Avon Lake has been developed in the last 30 years. As a result homes are of contemporary styles ranging from cluster home condominiums to large, high-end homes.
The Avon Lake school system struggled to keep up with the growing population in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Today it is considered to be an excellent system and is noted for both academic and athletic accomplishments.
